This is an ArcGIS mapping project that interactively visualizes the residential information of Fillmore School students in 1877. Located in a historic Creole neighborhood of New Orleans, the school was known as one of the highly desegregated schools during Reconstruction. The end of Reconstruction meant the end of a brief integration period in New Orleans. The Fillmore School became a white-only school, yet, the list shows a very complicated process of segregation.
I examined the Fillmore school student admission list and combined the data with the multiple historical sources such as the Robinson Map of New Orleans (1882), and the U.S. Census. In so doing, this project demonstrates complex racial identities among Fillmore students at the end of Reconstruction.
