This June, I am honored to receive the Saito Makoto award from the Japanese Association for American Studies (JAAS) for my 2024 article, “Race and Rice Farming: Japanese Settlers in the American South at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century.” This article delves into Japanese migration to the Texas Gulf Coast at the beginning of the twentieth century and examines how they navigated Jim Crow while also justifying the expansion of the Japanese empire inside and outside the Pacific Rim.
